The other officers asked my Co-chair ,Tom Mair and I, to pen something inspirational to send to the Green Party Membership. The intent was to let you all know that we are here for you. Tom and I have been sharing ideas and I am the one who is going to put these ideas down on font, yet this is a joint essay.
We have been working on this for a few days and everything we write seems unoriginal. We have heard it all before, through every crisis we have gone through as citizens of the United States. Slogans like, "We are in this together" and "American tough", ring hollow and sound like just another feel good cliche. So what do you say to a Nation that is in fear?
As Tom and I thought about this, we came up with ideas. We Greens are idea people. We always have great ideas. Look at our Green New Deal...all great ideas. Tom spoke to that the November elections should not be cancelled. I stated we should not suspend the Constitution and go under Martial Law. Both great ideas, yet I am not sure how inspirational they are.
Tom talked about how rent, mortgages, and utilities should be waived for six months. More great ideas. The jails should only hold the most violent criminals and the others allowed to go home and be under house arrest like the rest of us are. This still doesn't sound very inspirational to me.
As a nurse, I am concerned that we have more tests for Covid-19 and the Government pay for them. Tom expressed concerns about how unemployed people are going to pay their property taxes. Policies need to be put into place so that people do not lose their homes. Again great ideas, yet where is the inspiration? What do we say?
I paused for a few hours and started looking at my Facebook pictures. I looked at my pictures of my daughter and son-in-law as we roamed through the Teddy Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota. Nestled in the Badlands, Doreen has her arms in the air, celebrating the beauty around her.
I looked at a video of my grandson shooting a basket and being cheered on by his team mates. I started to feel hopeful inside.
Pictures of my grandson's smile and pictures of my great-grandson leading his twin sister down a mountain path in Montana started to inspire me. It then hit me. There is nothing that Tom and I can say that hasn't already been said a thousand times before. We can present policies to the Government and with all of your collective support, we may be able to get them implemented. The inspiration you all need, we all need, has to come for within our own inner circle. We have to be willing to fight for those we love. They are who will inspire us. Collectively, if we all fight for our families, we will end up helping each other.
In the next few days, Tom and I will be putting out calls to action that our Green Party membership can do to help us all. Actions that will help our families...the people who inspire us. I hope you are inspired enough to help us. So what do you say?
